The following provides information about the Karoo Broadband Max services, in the form of a FAQ:
Availability
Question: Will the Karoo Broadband (Non-Max) services be available as well as the Karoo Broadband Max services?
Answer: No, new customers will only subscribe to the Karoo Broadband Max services; existing customers may opt not to upgrade.
Question: If I choose to stay on a Karoo Broadband (Non-Max) service will anything about the service change?
Answer: The service will not change in any way; i.e. the price, restrictions, speed etc will all be the same.
Question: If I upgrade to the Karoo Broadband Max services, will I be able to downgrade should I wish to do so?
Answer: You will only be able to downgrade if your service degrades as a result of the upgrade. The downgrade will be free.
Question: Will KC be publishing dates for the roll-out of the Karoo Broadband Max services in the various areas?
Answer: KC will not be publishing a list of dates, due to the way by which the dates are allocated, i.e. by telephone number cluster. However, the dates will range over an 11 week period, from the 9th of October to the 18th of December. You can find out when the services will be available for you by registering your interest via the Broadband Max section of the Karoo Portal.
Question: Do I need to register now in order to receive a free upgrade to a Karoo Broadband Max service?
Answer: No, upgrading to a Karoo Broadband Max service will always be free, but is subject to a new 12 month contract.
Question: Given that some users will be able to upgrade to the Karoo Broadband Max services upto 11 weeks earlier than others, will KC be reducing the prices (at the same time) for all users that request an upgrade?
Answer: The prices will change as/when you upgrade. Phased roll-outs are not unique to KC, even with lower prices.
Question: Will there ever be a Karoo Broadband Max Flexi, where you pay for option 1, 2, 3 or 4 on a month-by-month basis, depending on how much you used the service that month? (perhaps only flexing between options X and Y)
Answer: This is not currently in the KC roadmap for the Karoo Broadband Max services, but it will be considered in the future.
General
Question: Will I be able to have a static IP address with the Karoo Broadband Max services?
Answer: Yes, but only with option 4 of the Karoo Broadband Max services.
Question: Will I be able to have multiple IP addresses with the Karoo Broadband Max services?
Answer: No, this will not be available on any of the Karoo Broadband Max services.
Question: The FAQ provided by KC implies that during the first 15 days on any of the Karoo Broadband Max services, the connection will be automatically fine-tuned to suit the line/modem. Will this be re-doable after buying a new modem?
Answer: The connection is automatically fine-tuned, with occasional manual intervention, and will be re-doable if/when necessary.
Question: Will the 72 hour connection limit exist on the Karoo Broadband Max services?
Answer: KC hope to have removed the 72 hour connection limit prior to releasing the Karoo Broadband Max services.
Speed Restrictions
Question: Will the prioritising of network traffic only happen during peak-hours (between 6pm and midnight)?
Answer: The prioritisation takes place 24/7, but will probably be most noticable during peak-hours, due to the number of users.
Question: Will the prioritising of network traffic specifically reduce the speed of P2P and USENET services?
Answer: Yes, as this ensures that emailing and web browsing are not adversely affected by the use of such services.
Question: What services will the prioritisation reduce the speed of, in order to improve emailing and web browsing?
Answer: The KUG hope to receive the official answer shortly. (the expectation is mainly P2P and USENET services)
Question: Will the prioritisation detect different services by their protocols or their associated port numbers?
Answer: The KUG hope to receive the official answer shortly. (the expectation is protocol based)
Question: If my line/modem are capable of utilising the full 8192Kbps downsteam and 448Kbps upstream, what are the approximate speeds that I should expect to see, when accessing sites that are capable of fully utilising my connection?
Answer: The KUG hope to receive the official answer shortly. (the expectation is full speed, but perhaps only off-peak)
Question: Will the Karoo Broadband Max services effectively have a contention ratio, only implemented on a larger scale in order to help maintain high performance, i.e. will I share bandwidth with everyone who is on the same service?
Answer: Yes, as this is more effective than the initial contention ratio model that was described/implemented by ISPs in the past.
Usage Restrictions
Question: Will KC be providing me with usage statistics, so that I can see how much I have been using the service?
Answer: For the Karoo Broadband Starter Max service, KC are hoping to provide usage statistics. If it is not possible, e.g. due to time constraints, KC will be recommending some third-party software that can be used to achieve this goal. Either way, KC will always ensure that users are informed by email when they reach the 50% and 80% markers of their monthly usage allowance.
Question: If I go over my peak-time usage allowance for the month, will my speed only be reduced during peak-time?
Answer: No, your speed will be reduced 24/7 for the rest of the month, but only if you regularly break the Fair Usage Policy.
Question: Once I have used my usage allowance for the Karoo Broadband Starter Max service, can I choose whether I would like the speed of my service to be reduced, or whether I would like to pay for additional usage allowance?
Answer: No, you will automatically pay for additional usage allowance. On the Karoo Broadband (Non-Max) Starter service, the speed is reduced, hence users currently on this service may prefer not to upgrade to avoid paying for additional usage allowance.
Question: The FAQ provided by KC mentions two different prices for the additional usage allowance, which is correct?
Answer: The additional usage allowance comes in 2GB blocks, where each block costs £2. (charges are made based on usage)
